Manholes are essential underground structures used in sewer systems, stormwater drainage, and utility networks. They provide access for inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and connection of pipelines.
In this guide, we explain types of manholes, components, construction details, materials, and design considerations used in modern civil engineering projects.
What is a Manhole?
A manhole is a vertical access chamber constructed over underground pipelines or utility lines. It allows workers to enter the system safely for maintenance and inspection.
Manholes are commonly used in:
- Sewer systems
- Stormwater drainage
- Water supply networks
- Electrical & telecom utility lines

Types of Manholes (Based on Depth)
1๏ธโฃ Shallow Manhole (Inspection Chamber)
Depth: Up to 0.75 m
Used for: Small residential drainage systems
Features:
- Light-duty cover
- Brick masonry or precast construction
- Used in housing layouts
2๏ธโฃ Normal Manhole
Depth: 0.75 m to 1.5 m
Used for: Municipal sewer lines
Features:
- Access ladder provided
- Circular or rectangular shape
- Medium-duty cast iron cover
3๏ธโฃ Deep Manhole with Vent
Depth: Above 1.5 m
Features:
- Step irons or MS ladder
- Heavy-duty cover
- Larger diameter chamber
- Required in trunk sewer lines

Types of Manholes (Based on Material)
1๏ธโฃ RCC Manhole
Made of Reinforced Cement Concrete.
Advantages:
- High strength
- Durable
- Suitable for traffic loads
Used widely in municipal infrastructure.
2๏ธโฃ Brick Masonry Manhole
Constructed using burnt clay bricks and cement mortar.
Advantages:
- Economical
- Easy to construct
Used in small residential projects.
3๏ธโฃ Precast Concrete Manhole
Factory-manufactured and transported to site.
Advantages:
- Faster installation
- Uniform quality
- Reduced site labor
4๏ธโฃ HDPE / Plastic Manhole
Made from high-density polyethylene.
Advantages:
- Lightweight
- Corrosion resistant
- Ideal for chemical industries
Components of a Manhole
A standard manhole consists of:
1. Cover and Frame
- Cast Iron / Ductile Iron
- Load rating depends on traffic category
2. Neck
Connects the cover to the chamber.
3. Shaft
Vertical cylindrical wall.
4. Working Chamber
Main access space.
5. Base Slab
Concrete foundation at bottom.
6. Invert Channel
Semi-circular flow channel inside manhole.
7. Benching
Sloped concrete surface to prevent stagnation.
Manhole Shape Types
๐น Circular Manhole
- Most common
- Structurally stable
- Economical
๐น Rectangular Manhole
- Used for shallow depths
- Easier for brick construction
Standard Manhole Sizes (Typical)
| Depth | Internal Diameter |
|---|---|
| Up to 1.0 m | 900 mm |
| 1.0 โ 1.5 m | 1000 mm |
| Above 1.5 m | 1200 mm |
(Size may vary as per project specification)
Load Classification of Manhole Covers
- Light Duty (Pedestrian areas)
- Medium Duty (Residential roads)
- Heavy Duty (Main roads & highways)
- Extra Heavy Duty (Industrial yards)
Design Considerations
โ Soil condition
โ Traffic load
โ Pipe diameter
โ Flow capacity
โ Groundwater level
โ Corrosion resistance
Difference Between Manhole and Catch Basin
A manhole provides access to sewer lines.
A catch basin collects stormwater and traps debris before water enters the drainage system.
Applications of Manholes
- Municipal sewer systems
- Stormwater drainage
- Industrial drainage systems
- Smart city underground utilities
- Highway drainage networks
