Storm water drains are critical infrastructure elements designed to collect, transport, and discharge excess rainwater or surface runoff from roads, buildings, and other urban surfaces. In rapidly urbanizing areas, managing stormwater is essential to prevent flooding, waterlogging, and damage to public and private property.

1. Plan View

  • Location of the drain along roads or plots
  • Inlet points from catch basins or manholes
  • Pipe alignments and lengths
  • Gradient (slope) direction

2. Cross-Sectional View

  • Trench width and depth
  • Pipe or channel size (diameter for pipes or width/depth for open channels)
  • Bedding material and thickness (sand, gravel)
  • Surrounding fill and backfill materials
  • Cover level (top level of pipe/channel)
  • Invert level (bottom level inside the pipe)

3. Longitudinal Section

  • Drainage invert levels
  • Slope (typically 0.5โ€“2% depending on location)
  • Pipe invert level progression
  • Manhole or catch pit positions
  • Hydraulic gradient line (if detailed design)

4. Material Specifications

  • Pipe material (RCC NP3, UPVC, HDPE, etc.)
  • Jointing type (rubber ring, solvent weld, etc.)
  • Bedding and haunching details
  • Concrete encasement if required

5. Inlet/Outlet Structures

  • Catch basin or gully trap with gratings
  • Headwall detail for outfall
  • Flap gates or grates at discharge point

6. Manhole Detail

  • Typical spacing: 30mโ€“50m or at bends/junctions
  • Size and shape (usually 900x900mm or circular 1.0m dia)
  • Step iron spacing
  • Cover slab and frame

7. Notes and Dimensions

  • Minimum cover over pipe (typically 600mm)
  • Slope to be maintained
  • Instructions on dewatering, trench shoring if deep
  • Safety notes and local standard references
