Introduction:
In building construction, lintel slabs play a crucial role in supporting the wall opening areas such as doors and windows. A lintel is a horizontal structural member placed above the openings to bear the load from the structure above. It transfers this load to the adjacent masonry or RCC elements and prevents stress concentration around openings.
๐งฑ Purpose of Lintel Slab:
- To bear the load above window/door openings
- To distribute the structural load away from the openings
- To enhance the integrity and seismic resistance of masonry walls
- Often combined with a continuous RCC belt for earthquake-prone areas
๐ Typical Lintel Slab Layout Features:
- Thickness: Usually ranges from 100 mm to 150 mm depending on span and load
- Depth of Lintel Beam: Typically 150 mm to 300 mm
- Width: Matches wall thickness (generally 230 mm, 300 mm, or 450 mm)
- Reinforcement:
- Main bars: 2 or 3 bars of 10mm or 12mm dia (Fe500)
- Stirrups: 6mm/8mm dia @ 150mm c/c spacing
- Distribution bars: 8mm dia @ 150mm c/c

๐ Construction Guidelines:
- Clear Cover: Minimum 25mm for lintel slab in typical residential structures.
- Lap Length: Follow IS 456-2000; for Fe500, lap length is approx. 50 times bar dia.
- Bearing Length: Minimum 150 mm on either side of opening
- Curing: Proper curing of lintel slab (min 7 days) is critical to prevent cracks.
- Shuttering Support: Ensure proper formwork till the lintel achieves sufficient strength.
๐งฐ Materials Used:
- M20 Grade Concrete (1:1.5:3)
- TMT Reinforcement Bars (Fe500)
- Centering Material (Plywood/Steel Shuttering)
